Reformer Pilates

101 Pilates Reformer Classes

Just like Mat Pilates, Reformer Pilates is a low-impact workout that improves core strength, alignment and promotes a sense of mindfulness and well-being.

The main difference is in the equipment used. The Reformer consists of a sliding carriage, equipped with adjustable springs, pulleys, straps, and a foot bar. These components work together to create a unique resistance system that enables you to target muscles differently, leading to faster results as the muscles adapt to the constant tension of the springs.

The machine can look intimidating but once you learn the basics there are literally hundreds of exercises you can do which are impossible on any other apparatus. But it won’t all be new to the regular Pilates goer, you’ll recognise many of the moves; like the bridge, tabletops, single leg stretches and hip circles. Even the breathing is the same.

You can work out in a number of positions, in exactly the same way as mat Pilates. Either standing on the carriage, standing on the platform, lying on the carriage, mermaid position, or lying face down on the long box.

It is suitable for any level of fitness, as spring positions and complexity of move can be modified. The classes can be adapted to work on specific issues, like areas of arthritis, lower back pain or building stronger upper abdominal muscles for next pain. You can also request to work on specific body areas, like arm shaping and lower body strength, the choice is yours.

Reformer Pilates is super popular, with celebrities, sports people and just about everyone who gives it a go because you get fast results and finish feeling energised rather than exhausted. You’ll leave having worked your muscles more intensely, deeper and in a different way than ever before and it’s great for releasing tension too.

All classes are 1-2-1 and held at my home studio in Kempsey and are available on set weekends. Join the 101 Pilates Facebook group to find out which weekends.
